We all here in Russia feel deep regret and sympathy
with the victims of the unbelievable tragedy that happened in the USA. We
hope none of your relatives and friends suffered from this
terrible terrorist attack.
Dear Sir or Madam,
It has been a long month for all of us. But life seems to be getting back to normal, and
we hope that things are only going to get better. So does our famous
traveller, Peter, and he has joined us again to tell you about his adventures
here, and some interesting news on Russia. But, first he will continue
with Russian lessons because... Well, he will tell you why right now.
Russian Lessons from Peter
Or how not to get lost in St.Petersburg:
For a couple of days I was quite happy to be able to say
"Hello" and "Good-Bye" as the only Russian words in my
vocabulary. It worked fine with people I was
meeting, especially the ones I didn't want to keep in touch with.
"Privet" and "Paka" - that was it. But this was definitely
not enough to actually survive in Russia. Whenever I
was going out, trying to hold a conversation with people, or simply buying
food in the markets, lack of knowledge of some basic words could lead to a
catastrophe. You need to know how to be polite if you want to have a truly
pleasant holiday!
I think, "Thank You" is one of the most
useful words, especially when you are in a foreign country. Russian people
will definitely like you much better if you can thank them in Russian for
their services and help. The way to say "Thank you" in Russian
is "Spasiba". There are also two main expressions to
reply when somebody is thanking you: "Pazhalusta",
or else "Ne za shta" (an equivalent of an English
expression "Not at all")!
So good luck with being polite while in Russia
and
More Russian lessons from Peter in our future Newsletters!

St.Petersburg happenings:
October has brought even more of the cultural life back in St.Petersburg
too. Big news is that all the theatres are back in town after their
summer vacation! Plus now when the weather is getting a little cooler, all
the students and other young people are back in the dance clubs of
St.Petersburg. Definitely, more fun to go out and be a part of a big
crowd.

BIG OCTOBER NEWS!!!
On October 6th Mariinsky Theatre is opening its 219th Season
with
"Othello" opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The
premiere of the new version by Valery Gergiev and Yury Alexandrov
was performed during the Festival "Starts of White
Nights". During the summer tour of 2001 it was also performed
in Covent Garden Theatre in London, and Baden Baden Festival. I am a
lucky guy to be there on October 6th, but Mariinski will be open the
whole winter, - great time to travel to Russia!

One thing I really like
about he Hermitage museum is that each month, in
addition to its permanent collection, it is offering some
great temporary exhibitions. Now, throughout the end
of December the Hermitage, for the first time in its
history is holding the exhibition "The Treasures
of the Golden Horde". Exhibition is dedicated
to the artistic heritage of the Golden Horde and features
more than 1000 objects dating back to the 13th to 15th
centuries that were created by the masters of the
Golden Horde Khanate. |

You know, when I came to
Russia, I realized that I there is a lot more in our modern
culture than we think there is. The internationally acclaimed
festival of avant-garde composers who experiment with
classical music would be a perfect place to learn about
this culture.
13th International Contemporary music Festival "Sound
Ways"
will take place in St.Petersburg on
November 18-25 2001
The festival will feature premiers by St.
Petersburg composers, Russian premieres of major Western and Russian
Avant-garde composers, including Sofia Gubaidulina, Sergei
Slonimsky, Edison Denisov, Alfred Schnitke and others.

In November St.Petersburg is hosting the 5th stage of
"International Grand Prix of Figure Skating":
"Cup of Russia"
November 22 - 25th, 2001
As a big fan of Russian figure skating, I could never miss a
competition like this one. Especially now when I can watch it in the
"Ice Palace", one of the best skating arenas in
Europe.

New club is open!
On Friday September 21st, I went to see the opening of the new rock club
in the city - "Red Club". Excellent location (right
behind the Moscow railway station), plenty of space, good equipment,
and more importantly, great music and very interesting crowd. I have
been dancing the whole night, met some interesting people there too,
and planning to go there again this week-end. It would be great to see
you there one day!
