Dear Sir or Madam,
Monthly greetings from "Russian St.Petersburg Tours" team and brave little Peter. These moments of change
are the time when we all start to really appreciate
stability and consistency in life. We hope that our newsletter is
among those pleasant old good things around. We all have been thinking of
you, so did Peter. We like to believe that you have been thinking of us
too. By the way, our Peter has been in St.Petersburg for over four months
now, and he is still discovering something new every day. Today he has
joined us again with a bunch of his recent stories to tell.
Russian Lessons from Peter
Or how not to get lost in St.Petersburg:
Having spent four months in Russia, I can say
for sure that it is the people you meet that help you make the most of
your time. Especially here. But to get to know people you really need
to know their names, and then to remember their names well, so that you
can avoid those little confusing situations when you start calling people by somebody
else's names and... Well, let's continue with our lessons and as you might
have already guessed, the subject of our today's lesson is "How
to ask for a person's name in Russian".
For people that are close to your age
you can simply say: "Kak tebya zavut?" and for
those who seem much older or looks very important say: "Kak vas zavut?"
Both those expressions stand for English "What is your name"
but in Russian there are two ways to address people - "ty"
(=you) which is casual and for people of the same age with youl, and "vy"
(= you) for older guys and VIPs. In return, I think that it would be polite to introduce
yourself as well, for which you can say: "Menya zavut (+ your
name)". This expression stands for the English: "My name is ... ".
Russian names may seem hard to pronounce and remember
at first, but the more time you spend here, the more natural they sound
to you.
More Russian lessons from Peter in our future Newsletters!
As usual, the latest news from "Russian St. Petersburg Tours" that have been helping me quite a bit during my
trip to Russia.

Embroidery in
Gold in Russian Orthodox Church Tour !
I was truly amazed to see the Byzantine magnificence and splendor of
orthodox worship
that are illustrated in embroidery samples. Only with "Russian St. Petersburg Tours" you will visit the functioning
college of Embroidery in gold and see not only the samples of
Russian Orthodox church clothes and other Russian crafts and
souvenirs but also the process of how all those things are actually
made!

St.Petersburg happenings:
Despite the chilly and rainy fall weather, there are still plenty of
fun things to do here, partly with help of my new friends whom I got to
meet thank to my great new skills in Russian language. In fact, this time of year has many benefits because you have more time to visit all the
museums and theatres of St.Petersburg, and then go to clubs and parties almost every evening.
Those clubs are, by the way, the ideal
place to practice your Russian too.

Halloween Party!!! All the dead
spirits are coming to St.Petersburg!!!
Well, actually, I haven't found any dead spirits anywhere, instead,
there were many parties and masquerade celebrations in different
clubs of the city among which are All-Star Cafe, City
Bar, Fish Fabrique, the James Cook Pub,
Mollie's Irish Pub and Red Club
all featuring the special programs of music, costumes, competitions and
promotions. I tried my best to see and do as much as possible and
that was the most fun night for me so far!

Bolshoy comes to Mariinsky stage!
The exchange between two most famous theatres in Russian (Bolshoy
and Mariinsky) is definitely a benefit for tourists like me and all
the people in the two capital cities too. I now don't need to travel
all the way to Moscow to see glorious Bolshoy Ballet because
on November 3 and 4 they are coming here with their most
famous performance "Swan Lake" by
Tchaikovsky (Choreography by Yuri Grigorovitch). At the very same
time, an audience in Bolshoy will be watching the Mariinsky's
"Sleeping Beauty" by the same
composer.
The exchange continues in two weeks (November 17th and 18th)
with two operas: Bolshoy travelling to St.Petersburg for two
performances of "Eugene Onegin" by
Tchaikovsky and Mariinsky returning to Moscow with Pokofiev's
"Semyon Kotko"!

The city itself is getting more and more beautiful every day. A
couple of weeks ago I went to the opening of Mikhailovsky Castle
after the restoration of the building itself, its needle and
surroundings. The castle is now lighted at night and partly
open for visitors. The future plans include restoration of two small
channels around the building to make it a real castle again, and
opening the castle as one of the Hermitage branches. So you can come for the
opening of the museum if you start planning your trip now!

I have also decided to join the RST web-team in
making the world a little better. Only I have started with myself,
and I think that the exhibition:
Abstract Art in Russia: The Twentieth Century
All December 2001 in
Russian Museum
would be a perfect start for my great plan. The exhibition shows more than two hundred paintings and sculptures from the collection of the Russian Museum. The
works on display range from revolutionary abstractions by Wassily Kandinsky in the early twentieth
century to the examples of such other non-objective movements as Mikhail Larionov's
Rayonism, Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism, and Pavel Filonov's analytic art.

I think I've already mentioned it before, but
this is really something! Very soon St.Petersburg is hosting the 5th
stage of "International Grand Prix of Figure Skating":
"Cup of Russia"
November 22 - 25th, 2001
As a big fan of Russian figure skating, I could
never miss a competition like this one where I can
watch all the best figure skaters competing in the "Ice
Palace", one of the best skating arenas in Europe.

Well, before I say good-bye till next month, I would like to repeat
that there are always plenty of things to do in St.Petersburg.
During the day you can choose between going to museums, fairs and
exhibitions, sport events and competitions, or simply strolling along
the streets of St.Petersburg because the city itself is like a museum
under the open sky. And in the evening pop in any club or bar and
continue your day with a glass of beer, talking to people around about
whatever comes to mind, dancing and having a good time day to day. I
have to go now.
