Dear Sir or Madam,

We're happy to see you in the New Year again! We all hope that you've had a nice Christmas and great New Year party. Well, the New Year is time to start the new life, and we hope that this year will only bring  happiness and joy into your lives. By the way, it's a good time to start planning your trip to St.Petersburg for the "white nights", and other interesting events. And, of course, it's the right time to continue with:

Russian Lessons from Peter
Or how not to get lost in St.Petersburg:

Well, guys. I just realized that our lessons are actually titled "How not to get lost..." I only understood the importance of this phrase now, after I went to visit those cute girls I met a couple of weeks ago. They turned out to live in some remote part of the city. Where nobody speaks English. And houses look so similar. Anyway, I got lost and spent all evening trying to ask people how to get where I wanted. But guess what, I didn't know the right way to do so. In the end I felt so cold, tired and lonely...

Hope this never happens to you! That's why I think it would be very useful to learn how to find your way around not only on the map. And we'll now talk about different ways to ask people help you find your way around St.Petersburg (or any other Russian city).

The usual way to ask somebody give you directions is "Kak prayti v + (name of the place you are looking for)?". But honestly, it doesn't only look hard. You need to know Russian pretty well to use this one successfully. Luckily, you can simply say "Gde + (name of the place)?" and people will understand you. Oh, and don't forget to address the person first by looking them in the eyes and saying: "Izvinite, pazhalusta"

So the complete phrase will be: "Izvinite, pazhalusta, gde + (name of the place)?" which can be translated as "Excuse me, where is (name of the place)?"

The hardest part begins when people actually start giving you directions. Just look lost while they are talking and watch for the key word "Tam..." (stands for the English "It's there ...") followed by the pointing arm gesture. This is the direction that you should take. Or better find someone who can speak English :-) and then come study Russian with RST.

Best Advice on Russian Bride Search

While I've been in Russia, I've been met quite a few foreign guys too. And as I have noticed many of them were trying to find someone special here, in Russia. Well, with the new network of partners, RST is now glad to offer 5 best pieces of advice for men who are looking for a Russian wife.

5 Best Pieces of Advice
for Men Looking for a Russian Bride.
It's not easy to find 5 best pieces of advice (from all those "not to do..."),
but we'll try.

If you are looking for a Russian woman, you need keep in mind the following:

1. Do NOT think that a Russian woman is looking for a new country, she is only expanding her chances to find a foreign partner for life.

2. Never forget to show your interests and above all your respect for the real Russian culture which is one of the warmest you will ever meet, I am certain we can learn a lot of the Russian culture.

3. Never use material comparisons as a practical joke between her and your country. You could embarrass her or worse, even insult her.

4. In case of your 'first' personal meeting with your Russian beloved. Never suggest her to come to your country, but always suggest her to visit her in Russia, for example in a big city, she will be much more comfortable with
this suggestion and she will be proud to show you her beautiful country an will introduce her to her family and friends and I bet it will leave you a great impression. Don't forget, for her it's ten times more difficult to visit your country instead of you to visit her in Russia.

5. Never forget to treat her as a real woman and with unconditional respect. No matter their age, their education or general life circumstances, in their country they will always treat you like a very important person who arrived
into their lives.

We hope these small tips are helpful. If you would like more advice in this area, feel free to contact us at info@russian-st-petersburg.com.

And we hope it'll help you find someone special before the Valentine's day (which you could spend in St.Petersburg too)!

St.Petersburg happenings:

As St.Petersburg is getting deeper and deeper into winter, the days become a little longer and we get more and more snow, I start to really appreciate the opportunities that Russian winter brings to its true lovers.

The whole January is pretty much a big holiday month here in Russia. Almost everything has this Christmas spirit in it... On January 7th we attended the service in celebration of Russian Orthodox Christmas to Alexander Nevsky Lavra, then had a nice Christmas dinner. And this week-end me and my friends are celebrating the "Old New Year". Big Party coming!!! No street festivals on Nevsky and Palace Square, but the party seems to be even more entertaining than the first one!

*****

Just what I've been talking about. Winter can be so much fun. The first International Ice Sculpture Competition will take place in Saint-Petersburg in the Peter and Paul Fortress from 30th January till 3rd February, 2002. Fifteen Russian and foreign teams will present the "Images of the Cities of the world". See the world most famous cities without leaving St.Petersburg! I was thinking about taking part in the competition too but my city seems to be a little bit too small for it ...

*****

If you want to feel the Christmas spirit too, a great place to do so is 11th International Festival "Musical Christmas Encounters in Northern Palmyra". The festival will be held through January 26th, 2002 in Academic Shostakovich Philharmonic Hall, Conservatoire Theater, and Culture Center. Classical music performances by the best orchestras and musicians of the world. Some concerts of the festival are really something!

*****

Oh, and the Russian Museum will feature special Christmas exhibition "Life of Christ". I can't say that I'm a very religious person but it should be really interesting to see all those icons, paintings of 18th-20th centuries, graphic art, and craftsmen's works. The exhibition is open from January 01 till January 31, 2002. Plenty of time to see everything.

Yoo-hoo! Remember I told you about skiing/snowboarding in St.Petersburg area? Well, there's even more than just skiing. I'm now starting to get ready to the Snowboard St.Petersburg Cup. The competition is planned for January 28th - January 31st, 2002 in Korobitsino ski village, only 1,5 hours away from St.Petersburg. See you there, maybe?

With that strange Higher Education system they have in Russia, poor students have to take their finals right after the New Year. That way they don't even get to truly enjoy New Year and Christmas holidays. Can you imagine: trying to have fun while your final exams are on the way. That's why they celebrate their Students' day (called Tatiana's day for some reason) on January 25th, right after the finals are over! The World DJs are also coming to greet Russian students as a part of Love-Parade Marathon in the Ice Palace concert hall.

By the way, Russian St.Petersburg and EducaCentre are having a party for all  their students too!
