Dear Sir or Madam,
Good
to see you again. We all (Peter and EducaCentre staff) wish that it
was actually in person. But letters are better than nothing, they are a good
way to share our thoughts and our news with you. As always, we'll start with a
small lesson of Russian language from our young traveller.
Russian Lessons from Peter
Or how not to get lost in St.Petersburg:
You learn as you live because every day brings
something new. I'm not trying to be philosophical here. It's just that
this month I have discovered that knowing things like "Privet",
"Paka" and "Spasiba" were not quite
enough... Sometimes even my
behavior makes me feel bad in the end.
Yeah. I didn't really care about it until... This was a
nightmare. I met up with my friends and we all went to this place,
"La Plage" club. So we were having a party, chatting, dancing, meeting new people. It was
going really well. And then I just stepped out of my way and... fell. On
someone's table. And there was all this food on it. A piece of big
creamy cake went right into some lady's face, a hot meal ended up on
a gentleman's suit. Glass from the table was everywhere, water, people
around falling... I felt so bad for everybody after they fixed that.
The worst thing was that I didn't know how to apologize to all
those people. Especially to the ones who only spoke Russian (like the lady
with cake on her face). Never going back to this place.
Later, I noticed that there are quite a few situations when
you need to know how to say "I'm sorry" or "Excuse
me", (in places like public transport, shops, cinemas, when you are
visiting people, and even on the streets). That's why the topic of our
today's lesson is different ways to apologize in Russian.
In the situations when you need to apologize for
something that you have done, say: "Izvinite" or "Izvinite,
pazhalujsta" (means "I am sorry" or "I
am very sorry"). "Izvinite, pazhalujsta" can
also be used when you need to attract someone's attention (stands for the English
"Excuse, me").
Oh, and if you feel sorry for someone and would like to
tell them about it, you can say: "Mne ochen' zhal'" or "Sochustvuyu"
(both those expressions stand for the English "I am so
sorry").
Having said all this, I'd like to add that I hope you
use all of the above very very rarely. And will be using "Privet"
and "Kak tebya zavut?" a lot more often, while in Russia!
More Russian lessons from Peter in our future Newsletters!

What's
new in Educacentre
Ever
wondered where I learned my Russian? "EducaCentre school" is the
answer. Here are the latest news from those guys:
|
 |
Summer days. Time to learn Russian.
I was just thinking about my Russian lessons. They are fun, of course,
but you only get a chance to learn something once a month. If you've never studied Russian before (or only from my newsletters) but
are thinking of doing
it at some point, this is the news for you!
On June 3rd an Absolute
Beginner group is starting at EducaCentre! Great
chance to have a trip to St.Petersburg, see the "white
nights", experience living
with a Russian family, meet people from all over the world, party, and, on top of everything, have
4 lessons of Russian each day. You
can choose to stay for any length of time, from one week up to one year.
Interested? Just e-mail rus@educacentre.net
and join the group!

Go Travel-Study!!!
There is something here for everyone. If your
summer plans are still up in the air, I'd seriously consider this
opportunity. No matter how good your Russian is. In EducaCentre you
can always choose any combination of studying and travelling
around the country after your course is over. Come and have 20
lessons of General Russian for a a couple of weeks, get to know the
country, and then spend the rest of your vacation travelling around.
All you need to do is contact
those guys. They'll reply, I promise :-)
Oh, and if you only wish to travel, they'll be
glad to help you too!

Slava
is back in the office and on-line
After a long month in Moscow, Slava Bochkov,
Russian Language Manager of EducaCentre is now back in the
office! I know that some of you have been missing your on-line
education advisor. He's now back to
answer any of your questions about Russian language in
St.Petersburg.

This month in
Saint Petersburg and Russia
As always, I've kept some of the most interesting news
of the coming month for you! We only meet once a month, and there's always
so much to say... Spring time here. After a long long winter,
every day brings something new and fun. I'm getting really excited.
|
Good news for all St.Pete! No more ice
on the rivers! I almost forgot how nice the city looks with water.
Although it's probably better with ice if you are going home late and
suddenly fall down from the bridge, for no reason... Anyway, all rivers and channels
in St.Petersburg and the North West region are open for navigation
(and river excursions!) The bravest of us are even trying to swim.
He-he. Good luck to them. I'm going to wait until June at least.

"300 Years to St.Petersburg" Well
not yet. Coming soon, in May 2003. Just one year before the
celebration, May 24th through May 27th, the IV
International exhibition and conference will be held in Mikhaylovsky
Manezh. The conference is dedicated to preparing festivities for St.Petersburg 300th anniversary.
It would be interesting to learn what
exactly is in their plans. www.spb300.com

So, what do you guys think of weapons? Wait,
wait. I already hear many of you going "Oh, no. Weapons are
evil, Peter, what are you talking about!" I'm not really into
them either. But they've always been a part of our lives. Thus, I am not
going to miss the chance to see the whole XXth century
history of weapons that is featured at the "Legendary
weapons of the XXth Century" exhibition at the Military-Historical
Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps. Open through
the end of May.

You know, sometimes I feel
that all I write about is various exhibitions, you must
be getting kind of bored... But there are so many of them
in this city! OK, this is the last one for today, "III
Antiquarian Salon in St.Petersburg". Good days
for all antique lovers. More than just exhibition! May
21st through May 26th, in the Russian Ethnographic
Museum (Marble Hall) you can see and buy items
of the XVII - XX century from the best antique salons,
galleries and private collections of Russia. Paintings,
graphics, applied art, jewelry, icons, porcelain, etc.
My bags, I'm afraid, wouldn't be able to take any more
stuff. But if you are into antiques, there should something
for everyone. |

May is also the month of Festivals, I'm telling you! I
already wish there was a second Peter to help me see everything.
Unfortunately, our technology hasn't gone that far yet. The month will start with Xth State cinema
festival "Vivat Russian Cinema!", featured in the city
cinema theatres. I bet most of you don't know much about Russian movies. Well, from May
10th till May 15th you'll have a chance to improve this
situation a little.

And this is something rather recent for St.Pete!
This far in the north, it's never been the city of flowers. But things
change over time. For the 13th time now, the white nights bring
some of the world's best flower designers for the International
festival of flower designers "White nights in St.Petersburg".
Open May 21st through May 28th in the St.Petersburg Philharmonia
and Palace "Little Baby".

couples at the International rating tournament IDSF
Open Latin will make you feel hot, for sure! |

Coming soon!!! I found it
pretty amazing when I first learned about it. Most of you have already
celebrated Easter this year, but not Russia. I mean they sort of have,
but only to support the West. Russian Orthodox Easter will be
celebrated on May 5th. What's more, May 5th is not the fixed
Easter date, the celebration day changes each year! By
the way, last year was the only time when Russia celebrated Easter on
the same day with the rest of the world.
