Dear Sir or Madam,

Warmest May greetings from Peter and EducaCentre. May in Russia is known for bird cherry tree blossom, holidays, love at the first sight, and good weather. What else does one need to feel absolutely happy? That's what we wanted to share with you in our newsletter.

Russian Lessons from Peter
Or how not to get lost in St.Petersburg:

Today we are going to speak about something really important. Well, I don't mean to say that everything that you've learned before is unimportant. But there is one thing that can never be neglected. FOOD. Do you know what it is like to die of hunger. I didn't know either. But one time...

I went to see the "Cinderella" ballet premiere at Mariinsky with a girl I met a little while ago. The ballet was cool. But it made me real hungry. Well, it wasn't exactly the ballet that made me hungry, I just hadn't had a chance to eat for a whole day. What could be more logical to do than to go to a nice restaurant after the performance. That's what I thought. Apparently, my date had a different idea. She wanted to take a little walk along the streets, and then walk and walk and walk... And I was getting more and more hungry each minute. I thought I was going to starve to death. But I couldn't explain that all I wanted was to stop by a cafe and get some food. I was so happy to finally get home. My dear little fridge! I had never loved you that much before.

So if you are starving or even just a little hungry, say "Ya khachyu kushat' " or "Ya goladen". Both these expressions mean "I am hungry". By the way, if you are thirsty, say "Ya khachyu peet' " (stands for the English "I am thirsty").

And if you want to invite someone to eat out instead of spend your evening on the streets, you can say "Paydyomte v reestaran" (means "Let's go to a restaurant") or "Paydyomte v kafe" (means "Let's go to a cafe"), depending on what kind of place you prefer. And that's it! Just enjoy the food.

Next time, I'll teach you what to say in a restaurant, so more Russian lessons in our future Newsletters!

What's new in Educacentre

HOT!!! "White Nights Russian" - June 9th through June 23rd.

It's "hot" not because they moved all Russian classes to the night time, don't worry. The classes are still in the mornings and the nights are left for you to explore the city. They were thinking of making it a super-intensive 24 hour course because the sun would be out at nights, thus students wouldn't need to sleep. But then they all agreed nights should be for fun, like exploring the city, and all.

No! to night classes, and, yes! to a life-time vacation. Come to St.Petersburg during the most beautiful time of year and have two weeks of General Russian, host family accommodation, visa support, airport transfers, "white nights" party on a boat, sailing along the Neva river, and a visit to the most famous Saint Petersburg brewery "Baltica" - only US$750! Click here to learn more!

Brain Ring Championship of EducaCentre

For the first time this year, the students of Russian language are invited to compete with the Russian students of English at the "Brain Ring Championship". One of the most popular games in Russia, Brain Ring, is the quiz for teams of 5-6 people. During the competition general quiz questions are presented to the team and they have about 1 minute to come up with the answer. No need to know everything. Brain-storming and communication within the team is the key to success. The competition will be held in English

If you are here in June, you are very welcome to participate. If you have more questions about this game, feel free to ask Lena, the winner of Russian National Championship, Head of English Studies of EducaCentre at brain-ring@educacenre.net. Oh, and if you are here on May 24th, 2002, you are welcome to come to the competition too!

This month in Saint Petersburg and Russia

The "Black square" return. It was the big news here. The Hermitage has just purchased the "Black square" (1913) by Kazimir Malevich. The painting is going to be the basis of the XXth century collection along with the "Composition#6" by Kandinsky, the "Dance and Music" by Matisse and the "Three Graces" by Picasso. I better go have a look now, before it gets too busy in the Hermitage.

It's getting close. One of the main attraction of Saint Petersburg. Just like me, you must have heard of it so many times! Have you guessed? It's the "White nights", of course. Even now nights are getting really short. In less than a month, we'll be walking in the streets through the night without even knowing it's time to go to bed. Can't wait till I can also take a boat and sail along the Neva river all night long... My first time in the white nights, you know.

End of May. This is when everything starts. With the second Petersburg International Carnival on May 25th. Me and my friends are already preparing our carnival costumes. Going to be "The Simpsons". The only problem that I can't decide where to go. Stay in the city centre, in the middle of crazy dancing, ice-cream eating and other festivities or see the opening of fountains in the "Peterhof". I kind of want to see both... Hydrofoil could be a good solution, I guess.

June is a good month for theatre lovers. No time to eat, sleep, go out. Only kidding. Some time will be left of course. But not much because for the whole month, from May 31 through June 30 the X International festival on arts "White Nights Stars" will be bringing the most famous opera and ballet performances to the Mariinsky Theatre.

*****

It's a good month for water sports lovers too. Everyone gets something fun! Unless you like both, just like me... My friends keep telling me that I need to devote a lot more time to sports because I've been eating so much the whole winter. I think I'm now going to start training for the Saint Petersburg Rowing Slalom that is taking place on May 24th - 26th on the Vuoksa river by Losevo town (about one hour away from Saint Petersburg). We are not professionals but they promised there will be a place for everyone!

In fact, almost every community is trying to take advantage of the white nights and finally get together. It's probably because they can see each other better, who knows. Anyway, on May 26th for the the first time "White Nights of St. Petersburg" International Motorcycle Festival will be held on the Vasilevsky Island Point. A vast display by the stunt riders and daredevils from the "Risk" club is expected; there will also be a gala concert, a bikers fashion show and a performance by the Russian national motorcycle trials team. This time I am only watching.

Yoo-Hoo! Beer rivers in Saint Petersburg! For the sixth time now, all major beer companies of Russia come to Saint Petersburg for the Beer Festival. The whole city centre is given to the beer companies and beer lovers. All sorts of beer, bands playing all round the city, people dancing... Just have to wait until June 8th.

*****

Coming soon!!! City 299th Anniversary on May 27th. Only 12 months left until the Saint Petersburg 300th Anniversary, the biggest event of the coming year.
