Moscow, the capital of Russia, was founded in 1147 by prince
Yuri Dolgoruky as a fortress on the bank of the Moscow river.
Within over 850 years of its history Moscow has developed
into the one of the largest cities of the world with a territory
of almost 1000 sq.km (appr.650 sq.miles) and a population
of about 10 million people.
It is the economic and political centre of Russia, the seat
of the Russian government. There are a lot of inland and foreign
companies, educational and cultural institutions in the city.
The Kremlin, a north-pointing triangle with sides 750m (2460ft)
long, is at the heart of Moscow in every way symbolically,
historically and strategically. Red Square lies along its
east side, the Moscow River flows past its south side. From
here, Moscow spreads out in four distinctive rings of development,
each area having its own collection of monasteries, museums
and elegant buildings.
